Innovation for Human Well-being Prof. Zhiyong FAN and his team have developed a biomimetic eye with a hemispherical perovskite nanowire array retina. This “super human eye” has 30 times more sensors on the artificial retina than the real human eye. With the high imaging resolution, it will be ready for integration into medical robots to take care of patients. Let There Be Light There was light, and nowadays the Internet of Lights (IoL). Prof. Patrick Yue’s team are developing 100G-bit-per-second optoelectronic ICs with silicon photonics and CMOS technologies and sub-decimeter robotics indoor positioning system using LED lighting based visible light communication techniques. We shall apply light more intelligently. Can a Robot Empathize with Emotions? Prof. Pascale Fung and her team pioneered the concept of “empathetic machines” that can recognize human emotions and respond with empathy. They implemented this into a virtual companion for people in quarantine, and another virtual therapist to help elderly people. These systems are based on deep learning which enables them to learn from actual human therapist interactions. From IoT Devices to IoE Applications While 5G is being deployed around the world, efforts from industry and academia have started to look beyond 5G and conceptualize 6G. Prof. Khaled B. LETAIEF, one of the world’s leading pioneers on wireless communications and member of the United States National Academy of Engineering, is pushing forward advanced technologies for 6G which will be evolved from “connected things” to “connected intelligence” with AI playing a central role. Mark MAK, co-founder of Roborn Technology, envisions to build a remarkable Hong Kong brand in robot design and technology. As a childhood dream, Mark had wished to build his own robot which can help society overcome major threats. He chose BEng in Electronic Engineering because the curriculum consists of multiple aspects of knowledge, ranging from microprocessor, programming to control system, which are necessary components for building robots. His inventions combine 5G connectivity, AI, IoT, Cloud to drive and develop wide range of robotic products and solutions. In fighting with the pandemic, Mark’s team developed Sau Wu – the first 5G Outdoor Disinfection Robot in Hong Kong – to enhance public hygiene and reduce the risk of virus transmission in public. It has been deployed at some public sectors such as the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), Customs and Excise Department and Harbor Office of the Development Bureau, and positive feedbacks were received from the departments and people in the neighborhood of the deployment sites (e.g. promenades). The team unceasingly develops different solutions to improve efficiency under the new normal. Freedom, a new 5G remote health diagnosis robot in Roborn, embedded with an integrated diagnosis camera system for high-quality image and video footage in real-time 2-way communication, providing convenient, reliable, efficient, and effective remote clinical service anytime anywhere with 5G technology. Freedom now is quickly gaining interest from the medical field. Based in Hong Kong and with office in Shenzhen and Jiangmen, leveraging resources in the Greater Bay Area, while continuing AI robotic solutions for property management and healthcare, Roborn will take the education sector as focus for upcoming development. Eddie CHONG completed his Bachelor, MPhil and PhD degrees in ECE at HKUST, where he got his initial inspirations of future business - the basic of microelectronics and micro-LEDs. He and his supervisor were one of the earliest groups in the world involved in the development of micro-LED technology. In 2009, Eddie founded Voilatec when he was still a fresh graduate. The company dedicates in the development of new manufacturing process for high brightness and high-power LEDs. He and his team created a new fabrication process that can simplify the conventional process and lower manufacturing cost. In 2011, he established LEDoS Technology after he was awarded HK$150,000 as the startup fund in the HKUST entrepreneurship competition. The company envisioned to promote Micro-LED technology for different applications. 10 years after his first business, he started Raysolve Technology in 2019, in both Hong Kong and Suzhou, China. The company works on disruptive micro-LED microdisplay for augmented reality (AR) glasses, the technology becomes the world first using 8-inch Gallium-nitride wafer process. The market of micro-LED and AR is emerging, the company is growing strong and awarded angel fund and pre-series A financing. The team plans to launch the first full color micro-LED microdisplay in nearer future, using the wafer fab in Suzhou. After all, back to where he started, Eddie treasured every chance to work with faculty, senior students and alumni on start-up projects throughout the study life at ECE. He gained lots of hands-on experience of the cutting-edge micro-LED technology, in the meantime he actively participated in Robotic soccer team and Robocon team. Eddie is very impressed with the provision of great environment, facilities, and opportunities that had equipped him with both the in-depth knowledge in ECE and a mindset in entrepreneurship. HKEIA Innovation & Technology Project Competition Award The project entitled “24GHz RADAR Design for Design for Driverless Vehicles” by three UG alumni Chun Fai LAM, Sil Kwong TSE and Wai Sing WONG, received the Merit Award in the “HKEIA Innovation & Technology Project Competition Award: For Students of Electronic Engineering or Related Engineering Fields” in 2019. COVID-19 Open Research Challenge A question answering and summarization system developed by a team from CAiRE won one of the ten tasks of the COVID-19 Open Research Challenge (CORD-19) on Kaggle. Competition is an essential part of the undergraduate education. Students can hone the skills they learned in class through working in teams with ECE and other engineering students to participate in local, regional and international competitions. Through various creative and technical challenges, students learn to develop a true engineering mindset. 16

Student startup team awarded seed funds The student startup team ‘Thermal Plus’ awarded the HKSTP pre-incubation STEP fund and the HKUST Entrepreneurship Acceleration Fund. Since fever detection is an effective means to limit widespread local transmission of the COVID-19 epidemic, the team developed a cloud-based temperature sensing system using low-cost thermal and RGB image sensors and machine learning algorithms to meet Hong Kong’s surging demand for automated body temperature screening stations. UG alumnus awarded the Third Prize in the HKIE Trainee of the Year Award UG alumnus Mr. LEUNG Wai Ho (ELEC ‘17) awarded the Third Prize in the HKIE Trainee of the Year Award 2019 for his achievement and contribution to Engineering Graduate Training, the HKIE and Hong Kong society. 17

A wide variety of career paths is available to ECE graduates. Upon graduation, they have taken positions such as electronic engineers, communications engineers, system analysts and designers, information technologists, computer project managers and many other technical and managerial positions. A significant portion chooses to continue their studies at the postgraduate level towards MPhil or PhD degrees. Even graduates who choose not to pursue technical careers find that the engineering training they obtained at HKUST has given them a competitive advantage over their co-workers, as they have sharpened their analytical and problem-solving skills during their studies. When I was in year 1, I saw the recruitment poster from the HKUST robotics team. I was very fascinated by the underwater robot which was built by people slightly older than me. At that time, I was determined to be a part of the robotics team and would like to learn more hands-on experience in making robots. I joined the robotics team as a hardware member, then learned how to design PCB, systems controls, and most importantly met a group of friends from all around the world. During my robotics experience, I developed my interest in electronic engineering and decided to put this major as my first priority during major selection. HKUST gave me lots of opportunities and guidance, and I do hope I would be able to continue to contribute to the robotics industry. When I was in UG, I never considered doing a PhD. I thought doing PhD is equivalent to wanting to be an academician. Eventually, I learned that PhD study is more about questioning the status quo and coming up with something better and more useful, an exercise I would very much enjoy. Since the program itself will take at least 4 years to finish, I prioritize the people I will be working with, the feasibility to obtain the school supports, and the geological location when deciding where to go for PhD. In that sense, HKUST becomes a perfect fit. Among the past few years in HKUST, it was very fruitful and satisfying in terms of knowledge and social interaction.
