232 4. Pearl River Estuary - South China Sea Cruise Trip 珠江口-南海航次 Abstract: With the full support of the Hong Kong Branch (HKB) of the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Guangzhou), 24 scientists from the area 1 of the HKB and the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology have accomplished a cruise to the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea during 28 June – 10 July, 2021. In this cruise, we aimed to understand the impacts of anthropogenic input and warming to marine life processes, with specific focus on the planktonic food web, microbial loop and microbe-driven biogeochemical processes. Therefore, we have conducted a series of observations and incubation experiments along a transect from the highly urbanized and eutrophic Pearl River Estuary to the offshore water in the shelf of the South China Sea, which is expected to display an obvious gradient of the anthropogenic inputs (e.g., nitrogen loading) from the river discharge (Figure 1). In total, we have 9 stations along the transect, in which time series observations were conducted at 3 stations that represented distinct water bodies (P01: estuarine water; EP03: transitional zone; A02: offshore oceanic water). At these 3 stations, samples for diverse biogeochemical parameters were collected every 3 hours for 24 hours (9 time-points in total). Besides, we have conducted temperature manipulating incubation experiments at all stations except station A04, in which the responses of different life processes were studied under different temperatures (-5°C, -3°C, ambient, +3°C, +5°C).
