Four Research Areas 四大研究方向 29 Research Area 3 研究方向 ( 三 ) Task Leader Prof. Jianwen Qiu Department of Biology Hong Kong Baptist University 学术带头人 邱建文教授 香港浸会大学生物系 Area 3: Cold seep biodiversity, functioning, and genomics The seepage of combustible gas hydrates out of the seabed results in the formation of cold seeps. Cold seeps are usually densely populated with macrobenthos such as mollusks, crustaceans, and siboglinid tubeworms. Many of them are characterized by forming symbiotic association with chemoautotrophic microorganisms. Microbes and animals are important biological groups that maintain the functioning of cold seep ecosystems. Studying the cold seep ecosystems can help uncover the development and evolution cold seeps, as well as their roles in the global geochemical cycles. Studying the biodiversity and adaptability of cold seep organisms can deepen our understanding of the origin and evolution of life in these special habitats, identify genetic resources that can benefit the human society, and promote the protection of biodiversity in these chemosynthesis-based ecosystems in the search of clean energy. 方向三:冷泉生物多样性、功能、以及 基因组学 可燃冰分解产生的流体组分溢出,在海 底形成冷泉。冷泉生态系统密集分布多 细胞大型底栖生物,包括软体动物、甲 壳动物、管状蠕虫类等,他们大都与化 能自养微生物共生。冷泉微生物和动物 是维系生态系统功能的重要生物类群, 对其进行研究,有利于阐释冷泉生态系 统的演化机制,以及它们在地球化学循 环中的作用。同时,对冷泉生物多样性 及其对特殊环境的适应机制可增进我们 对生命起源与进化的认识,合理开发可 为人类利用的基因资源,在寻找清洁能 源的同时提高对这些化能合成生态系统 生物多样性的保护。
