Research Highlights 研究亮點 57 The HKB collaborative research team led by Professor PeiYuan Qian (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology), conducted metagenomic analysis of a deep-sea vent snail, with the aim to study the impact of prokaryotic virus (phage) on the deep-sea endosymbionts host animal living in hydrothermal vent. They discovered that the phage and host adopt different genes to develop anti-viral defense system and counter-host defense system, respectively. The balance of these genes allow the adoption endosymbiosis with chemosynthetic bacteria in deep-sea animals in hydrothermal vents. This study provides new insights into phage–bacteria interplay in intracellular environments of a deep-sea vent snail. The new findings have been published on the journal Microbiome.
