58 The HKB research Team led by Prof. Guang Zhu (The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) identified the first crystal structure of G-quadruplux formed by twodiseases (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia) related GGGGCC sequence through a series of biophysical characterization. The d(G4C2)2 self-associates to form an eight-layer parallel tetrameric G-quadruplex. This unique high-resolution crystal structures are invaluable for designing/improving highly selective and stable small molecules for potentially ameliorating the pathology of ALS and FTD in the future.
