To Inspire. To Be Inspired. – 30 Stories on HKUST Faculty, Alumni and Students

As a chemistry student at HKUST, Francis Mok joined the choir on a whim, hoping to find people who loved to sing as much as he did. Little did he know, it was his first step towards a dream career. It takes great personal strength — and maybe a little bit of luck — to strike out from the known path in an entirely new direction. That’s what happened to chemistry graduate Francis Mok. One day while working as a project assistant on campus, he was suddenly struck by a moment of doubt about the path he was on. He was carrying out some clerical work when he felt music 101 rise within him, and an inner voice asked, What are you doing here? He proceeded to sit down at his computer, open the web browser, and follow the harmony in his heart to the website for The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). There on the homepage, he saw a date in bold: the application deadline for the Bachelor of Music was just one week away. Francis had never felt more purposeful and determined than he did in that moment — in fact, he’d never been so sure of anything. Without pausing to think, he filled in the application and sent it off.
