Today, watching Prof. Liem teach is uplifting. She’s creative and energetic; she loves her subject. She pays a lot of attention to effective presentation to help convey the course content to the students, and her teaching style emphasizes rationality and reasoning, which she believes are the key essences of university education. In 2021, she received a UGC Teaching Award in recognition of her dedication to outstanding teaching performance. The most satisfying part of teaching for Prof. Liem is the transformation of her students. “Their expressions when they finally get their ‘Aha!’ moments When she started her academic career at HKUST, without any prior teaching experience, she saw teaching as a challenging and daunting task. Even after having joined several teaching workshops at the Center of Education Innovation, she felt far from confident. To make matter worse, a flight delay left her feeling sick, jetlagged and drained on her third lecture, but the show must go on. To her surprise, she felt energized and excited as she started teaching and talking about subjects she is passionate about. That's the moment she realized she enjoys teaching, and she found her rhythm since then. Being a teacher has been a rewarding journey and I’m very lucky to live my dream with my current profession. After all, teaching is not just a job. It is a vocation, a service, a calling, and a mission.
