staff who offered various kinds of support to help him stay on top of his studies, despite his health condition. A true believer in the power of positivity, KJ’s outlook on life is contagious. Others often ask him how he maintains his strength and resilience, and what he values most. Without hesitation, he says “Happiness. If you’re not happy, you’re not living your life.” Connecting with those who suffered from the same illness, KJ has stepped up as an advocate for organ donation, an ambassador for the Children’s Heart Foundation, and an innovator — designing a backpack to store his LVAD medical device. After everything he had been through, KJ was discerning in where he applied for university, and was attracted to the stellar reputation of HKUST and the experiences friends had had there. In anticipation, he watched the same HKUST introductory video every night before bed, and to ensure he made the grades to attend, he studied every day after school. His hard work paid off, and he was granted a full scholarship to study at HKUST’s School of Business and Management. His first year at his self-described “dream university” was exceptional. KJ lived on campus, threw himself into campus life and activities, made new friends, and was grateful to university I always tell people around me that instead of focusing on the negative, analyze the situation you are facing and find the perfect approach to turn it into a positive one.
