HKUST PG Programs 2023-24 for Interdisciplinary Programs Office

The Interdisciplinary Programs Office (IPO) is a significant development in HKUST’s well-established tradition of innovative teaching, learning and research. Working across and with all Schools, IPO answers the demand of the community for graduates and researchers who can tackle the increasingly complex issues of our times through a special combination of knowledge and skills. Bringing together two or more different fields of disciplinary study together, IPO aims to cultivate a different type of educational environment and research experience for those interested in integrating their capabilities and developing original approaches to solution-building. We aim to foster a new breed of competent graduates who are open-minded, versatile and exploratory in their career development. We administer the interdisciplinary Division of Environment and Sustainability, which provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate education, research, as well as extensive community outreach programs focused on issues of environmental relevance. It also takes the lead in driving the educational effort on sustainability on campus. The Division of Public Policy fosters close collaboration across disciplines and schools to contribute towards the development of key issues on public policy related to local community and regional development by evidence based approach supported by our strength in science and technology. The newly established Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas envisions to foster and advance interdisciplinary innovation in education programs. It also serves as an incubator of new interdisciplinary education and research and a coordinator of interdisciplinary activities. Research projects in partnership with industry and the community are also encouraged, allowing full engagement of our students with the innovation & entrepreneur community, local industry and business sector. We are also actively involved in the development of various new educational initiatives at HKUST, including policy, sustainability, design thinking and entrepreneurship. Capitalizing on HKUST’s academic strength across a broad spectrum of disciplines, and a physical infrastructure and management style that are conducive to collaborative and interdisciplinary research, IPO’s postgraduate programs work synergistically to develop fresh insight and solutions in areas of critical importance. They do so by integrating broad-based knowledge and diverse skill sets. Research methodology, research presentations and communication skills are all key elements in our programs. The way forward for IPO will be challenging, but I’m certain that it will be rewarding. We offer cutting-edge degree programs and research opportunities that stand out from the crowd – and help our graduates and partners to do the same, be exposed to the everchanging world with diverse career opportunities so that they can thrive and excel in their own niches.
