School of Engineering Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 156 Development of Protonic Reversible Fuel Cells Supervisor: CIUCCI Francesco / MAE Student: WANG Heumil / MECH Course: UROP1000, Summer Proton conducting solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is a modification of ordinary SOFC, characterized by flexible fuel compatibility, non-precious-metal catalyst, and wider range of operating temperature. This report primarily focuses on material synthesis of cathode and electrolyte, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and symmetric cell testing. Different materials have been prepared as potential cathode candidate, followed up by XRD. Having both faces sprayed with cathode on electrolyte palette, symmetric cell serves solely to test the performance of cathode. Upon obtaining satisfactory performance of cathode via symmetric cell testing, one can subsequently conduct studies on creating and testing performance of fuel cell as well as making it more efficient. Multiphase Simulations with CFD Supervisor: FU Lin / MAE Student: PANG Ho Kiu Holdee / MAE Course: UROP1100, Fall Simulations on multi-phase flows such as shock-bubble/droplet interaction and cavitation phenomenon are important in solving modern engineering problems. Such flow phenomena are challenging to deal with using traditional CFD techniques, especially with processes such as droplet generation and moving contact line dynamics. This project aimed to explore the potencies of alternative CFD framework such as the MFC framework, which are particularly useful for dealing with multi-phase and multi-component flow. The software structure, algorithms used, and equations were studied, and the flow code was compiled under various settings of typical flow examples. The data collected were then analysed and used for visualization after the simulation.
