In this research, we examine if female entrepreneurs frame their entrepreneurial motivation differently than male entrepreneurs, and whether such differences in framing strategy contributes to reducing the bias. We examine our research question in the context of Shark Tank, a popular reality TV show in the United States. Our initial results suggest that female entrepreneurs emphasize their user experience more frequently than male entrepreneurs, even within the same industry. To understand the impact, we plan to examine the implications for fundraising by employing micro-level data and conduct text analysis to see how framing as user-entrepreneur shapes the follow-up questions from investors. Gender-biased Perception towards Entrepreneurship Supervisor: KWON Ohchan / ISOM Student: WONG Tsz Kwan / IS/GBUS Course: UROP2100, Fall UROP3100, Spring Gender homophily in start-up fundraising is often cited as an important factor contributing to the gender gap in entrepreneurship. Because existing studies focus on the investor side explanations, our understandings of why we observe gender homophily in start-up funding is incomplete. To fill this important gap, we focus on the entrepreneur side and examine whether entrepreneurs prefer investors of the same gender and the value attached to such homophily. We measure entrepreneurs’ preference for gender homophily with investors using data from Shark Tank. We analyze entrepreneurs who have received multiple offers from investors of different genders to control heterogeneity in entrepreneurial quality. Our findings contribute to entrepreneurship and homophily literature and provide practical insights in reducing the gender gap in entrepreneurship.
