School of Business and Management Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management 191 Gender-biased Perception towards Entrepreneurship Supervisor: KWON Ohchan / ISOM Student: XIA Xiaotong / MAEC Course: UROP1100, Fall Unemployment insurance (UI) provides cash stipends to unemployed workers who actively seek employment and is an essential part of social security system. However, is longer duration of UI always better for the society? What’s the underlying relationship between average working efficiency and UI? Under the supervision of Prof. KWON Ohchan, I received a great insight into this topic through readings, discussions, data findings, and analysis, after which I got had a better understanding of how UI affects the society. This report consists of mainly six parts, including introduction, objectives, findings & analysis, individual reflection, reference and appendix. A Study on Amazon Aggregators Supervisor: KWON Ohchan / ISOM Student: DENG Hanwen / WBB Course: UROP1100, Spring UROP2100, Summer Scholar have examined the impact of buyouts in different sectors. An increasing number of buyouts target online marketplace sellers recently, but we do not know how these buyouts affect these sellers in online marketplace settings. In this paper, we document changes in prices, sales rank, customer satisfaction, product introduction and discontinuation, and other characteristics of Amazon sellers experiencing buyouts. We find that operational practices improve after private equity buyout, as restaurants become cleaner, safer, and better maintained. These changes are particularly apparent when private equity partners have prior industry experience (maybe experience matters?). Our results suggest that by bringing in industry expertise, private equity firms improve firm operations. Who to Blame the Ricky Gig Economy: Jockey vs. Horse? Supervisor: KWON Ohchan / ISOM Student: LEE Chaewon / SBM Course: UROP1100, Summer Gig economy is important. However, there is a growing concern that gig economy platforms may incur unsafe practice. A change in fee structure implemented by a ride-hailing platform, where drivers’ fees were changed from an upfront charge for a fixed amount of time on the platform to a per ride commission. The upfront participation fee leads to a less flexible arrangement, which is likely important for part-time workers. In this paper, I propose an evidence to understand whether it is because of inexperienced gig workers, or because of the issues related to business models. We will empirically examine one Korean platform.
