School of Humanities and Social Science Division of Humanities 200 Division of Humanities Korean War Prisoners Oral History Interview Transcription Supervisor: CHANG David Cheng / HUMA Student: XUE Yuyuan / GCS Course: UROP2100, Fall As an essential part of the Second World War, the Burma Campaign was a battlefield where the Chinese, British and American troops worked together as alliance. Faced with the prospect of fighting together with different languages and weapons, military translators and interpreters were bound to be an important part of the cooperation that the three sides were able to develop smoothly. Where and how many Allied interpreters from China were recruited, their role in the Burma campaign, the difficulties they faced, and their personal experiences are all questions that Professor Chang David Cheng's current research project is intended to explore. Using the documentation provided by Professor Chang as a starting point, I have used primary and secondary sources to collate information on Allied interpreters. This report includes an introduction to the project, my work content and methodology, as well as my findings and personal reflections at this stage. History of Prisons, Penal Colonies and Quarantine Centers in Asia Supervisor: SMITH Jenny Leigh / HUMA Student: DONG Bochen / GCS Course: UROP1100, Fall In Fall 2021, I did some research into the history of leprosy in East Asia under the supervision of Professor Smith. First, I investigated Hei Ling Chau, a former leper colony in Hong Kong. Second, I examined the TaiKam Island in Guangdong. Third, I compiled a chart for some leprosy institutions in Taiwan. Fourth, I was advised to read journal articles about leprosy in Asia-Pacific, especially in Australia, the Philippines, and Hawaii from the 1920s to the 1970s. Besides, I gave a presentation on the history of leprosy in Japan. I paid attention to the maltreatment and slaughter of Guangdong lepers in the 1930s, too. By comparing the ways lepers were treated in different regions and times, I made some generalizations and gained deeper understanding of social progress. Overall, the project provided a starting point for my exploration of the history of leprosy.
