School of Humanities and Social Science Division of Social Science 207 The Covid-19 Pandemic: Social Science Perspectives Supervisor: SAUTMAN Barry / SOSC Student: OU YANG Cai Waverly Chua / GCS Course: UROP1100, Fall The donation or the sale of the Chinese vaccine caught global attention as some assumed that China might gain political influence by doing so. Based on the definition from scholars, we define "vaccine diplomacy" contain four elements, including trust enhancement; global health leadership; good quality of "made-inChina" products; and China as a technologically advanced nation. We investigated how Indonesian and Uzbekistan report on the Chinese vaccine and assessed whether their reports coincides with "vaccine diplomacy. We concluded that Chinese vaccine diplomacy might not be as effective in increasing China's influence as scholars considered as the media did not or could not draw a connection between the Chinese vaccine and the four elements mentioned above. China/Africa Links Project Supervisor: SAUTMAN Barry / SOSC Student: CHAN Hoi Ho / RMBI Course: UROP1000, Summer This report forms part of a larger China / Africa Links Project and investigates the agricultural partnerships between China and Africa. In particular, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi has been selected as countries of investigation for their varying degrees of economic relationship with China. While the Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the largest trading partners in terms of natural resources with China, Burundi is one of the most impoverished countries in the world and relies on China for aid. Special attention has been given to the economic relations and agricultural sectors of these two countries before proceeding to a more thorough discussion of agricultural partnership primarily through Agricultural Technology Demonstration Centers located in both countries. Towards the end of the report, using the basis of the indiscriminate aid and partnership China provides African countries, this report further argues that the Chinese-African agricultural technology is a shining example of altruistic South-South Cooperation.
