Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies Division of Integrative Systems and Design 210 Design of Smart Building Integrated Photovoltaic Systems Supervisor: XIANG, Changying / ISD Student: WOO, Hiu Lam / ISD Course: UROP1000, Summer Facade integrated photovoltaic (FIPV) systems have potential to provide clean electricity generation and a visible sustainability initiative in educational buildings. This Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) project at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) aimed to study the optimal color design of FIPV systems through hands-on measurements, surveys, prototype design, and experiments. The program provided knowledge on environmental aesthetics, architectural color theory, and color models. NCS color measurements were conducted on existing building facades to determine appropriate color ranges. Surveys collected data on color preferences from students, staff and faculty. The results will be used to inform the color design of FIPV system prototypes aiming to optimize aesthetic acceptance and electricity generation. Being involved in this research project has equipped students with valuable hands-on skills in experimental design, data collection and analysis, as well as providing an enriching early taster of academic research.
