Cells are solitary but short chains are observed occasionally. Valves are asymmetrical, sharply subconical, tapering into a very long, needle-shaped spine. Spines are usually straight, frequently occupying two-thirds of the total length of the cell. The spines keep almost constant diameters from the base for a certain distance, and gradually tapper into a sharp tip.
