There is a centrally located large hollow spine on each valve. However, Ditylum sol frustules are wider than Ditylum brightwellii, with diameters up to more than 200 µm. The edges of the valve are undulating (crenulate), and no short spines are observed. The crenulation extends throughout the girdle bands.
