The cyst is the main stage in the lifecycle. Cysts are unarmored, transparent, and crescent moon-shaped, with chloroplasts. Pyrocystis lunula may be bioluminescent. Planospores with flagella are motile, similar with Gonyaulax or Gymnodinium. 形態 細胞獨立生活，生活史較為複雜，分為不能遊動的包囊和遊動孢子兩種，其中包囊 期持續時間長，是生活史中主要存在的形態，不具甲板，呈新月狀。色素體明顯， 可能會發螢光。遊動孢子具鞭毛，可遊動，形態類似膝溝藻或裸甲藻。 Ecology and distribution Pyrocystis lunula is cosmopolitan planktonic species which could be found in both oceanic and coastal waters in warm temperate to tropical area. Pyrocystis lunula is also observed in cold waters in Russia. In Hong Kong coastal waters, Pyrocystis lunula is rarely observed with low abundance. 生態與分佈 新月梨甲藻廣泛分佈於暖溫帶至熱帶的大洋和近岸，也在俄羅斯周邊較冷的水域 有記錄。新月梨甲藻在香港海域不常見，豐度較低。
