Morphology Cells are relatively small and vary from triangular, oval to heart-shaped. Cells are relatively flat anteriorly, slightly narrow and rounded posteriorly. Two apical spines arise anteriorly. One apical spine is large and curved slightly while another one is small. Ecology and distribution Prorocentrum minimum is a cosmopolitan species in cold temperate to tropical waters inhabiting primarily estuarine and neritic habitats. Prorocentrum minimum is a bloom forming species and has caused numerous blooms in many countries. In Hong Kong coastal waters, Prorocentrum minimum formed 33 blooms in Hong Kong coastal waters from 1986 to 2023 and caused fish kill in 1990s. It is capable to produce venerupin (hepatotoxin) which may result in shellfish poisoning and further cause illnesses and even deaths in humans (Faust and Gulledge, 2002).
