Morphology Cells are solitary and pear-shaped, with dorsoventral compression. The epicone is conical, with straight or slightly convex margins, tapering into a short apical horn. The hypocone is hemispherical and generally shorter than the epicone. The post-median cingulum is deeply excavated and descending, with a displacement of about 0.5 cingular width. Sulcus is broad, almost reaching the antapex. Ecology and distribution Scrippsiella trochoidea is a cosmopolitan neritic and estuarine species. It is potentially harmful algae which is capable to form blooms. Scrippsiella trochoidea has caused more than 600 blooms in Hong Kong coastal waters from 2000 to 2023. Scrippsiella trochoidea is generally considered as nontoxic species, however, it may cause some lethal effects on coastal ecosystems and marine organisms (Hallegraeff, 1993; Shin et al., 2003; Tang and Gobler, 2012).
