Notably, Phaeocystis globosa (Haptophyta) Emiliania huxleyi (Haptophyta) Chattonella marina (Raphidophyceae), Heterosigma akashiwo (Raphidophyceae), Plagioselmis prolonga (Cryptophyta) and some silicoflagellate species are capable to form blooms. Some of these species, such as Phaeocystis globosa, Chattonella marina, Heterosigma akashiwo can form harmful blooms. Certain members of the Haptophyta, Chlorophyta, and Eustigmatophyceae serve as high-quality food sources for marine organisms like fish, shrimp, and molluscs. For instance, Isochrysis galbana of the Haptophyta, Platymonas helgolandica var. tsingtaoensis of the Chlorophyta, and Nannochloropsis oculata of the Eustigmatophyceae are notable examples. Coccolithophore species are significant contributors to the global carbon cycle due to their calcification process. Moreover, various Haptophyta species are capable to regulate climate by producing dimethylsulfide (DMS), a compound recognized for its role in the formation of cloud condensation nuclei.
