Phytoplankton Species in Hong Kong Coastal Waters

Morphology Two stages occur in the life cycle of Paeocystis globosa, a motile unicellular stage and a nonmotile colony-forming stage. Cells in unicellular stage have two flagellates longer than cell lengths and a very short haptonema. Colony-forming cells are embedded in a large smooth mucilage sphere, forming a thin monolayer and evenly distributed along the periphery of the colony. The spherical colonies possess diameters up to 4-7 cm and is visible to naked eyes. Both flagellates and haptonema of colony-forming cells are absent. Two yellow-brown chloroplasts are present in cytoplasm. Ecology and distribution Phaeocystis globosa is a cosmopolitan planktonic species widely distributed in temperate to tropical waters. Phaeocystis globosa is a bloom forming species and has caused 20 blooms in Hong Kong coastal waters from 2002 to 2023. Phaeocystis globosa also formed blooms frequently worldwide and caused fish-kill events due to the clog of fish nets induced by the mucilage colony. The foam produced in bloom may reach several meters
