Two flagella with equal length arise apically. Chloroplasts are large, cup or bowlshaped, H-shaped or star-like. Cells will be immotile in unfavorable living conditions and embedded by thick mucilage sheath after serveral divisions. Cells with flagella will get out of sheath in good living conditions. According to AlgaeBase, there are 544 species in genus Chlamydomonas which are difficult to identify based on light microscopic observation.
