Cells are lanceolate, roughly rhombic or elliptical in valve view. Valves are bilateral symmetry on both sides of apical axis and transapical axis, with a longitudinal raphe and a nodule in the middle. The lengths (apical axis) range from 10 to 65 µm and the width (transapical axis) range from 5 to 10 µm. According to AlgaeBase, more than 1600 species are recorded in genus Navicula which is difficult to identify into species level based on microscopic observation only. Ecology and distribution Navicula species are cosmopolitan, planktonic, and benthic.
