151 150 STUDENTS TAKING STUDY/SICK LEAVE DUE TO HEALTH REASONS When a student is mentally sick, health professionals may recommend reduced workload or study breaks to alleviate stress and to facilitate recovery. Students also need to be reassured that it is acceptable not to take as many credits as others. They may even extend their study years in order not to rush to graduate within a normal duration. It works better if schools, academic departments and Student Counselors are all jointly involved in supporting the student before, during and after the study leave. If the student gives his/her consent, please refer the student to the Counseling and Wellness Center for collaborative efforts. On resuming study, you may meet and discuss with the student to plan for an affordable study load to prevent relapse. Regular progress check, including paying attention to his/her class attendance, would provide useful information on whether the student is handling study without taking a toll on his/her psychological health. PAYING ATTENTION TO ABNORMAL ABSENTEES With the assistance from your teaching assistants or research assistants, you can pay close attention to abnormal absentees who fail to submit assignments and attend quizzes or examinations. Usually, a sudden change or deterioration in academic commitment or performance may signal some personal or emotional problems. It is worth your time to check-in with the students and see if they need any additional assistance.
