153 152 STUDENTS ON ACADEMIC PROBATION OR SUBJECT TO DISMISSAL Students may be on academic probation for a variety of reasons. Despite objective circumstances such as inability to deal with subject materials, it is often reflected on a significant drop on academic performance if students are facing difficulties or mental issues. Check with the student what gets in the way and provide concrete advice and support. In case of dismissal, always provide the student with enough psychological preparation before breaking bad news. Work with a Student Counselor for exit counseling to facilitate transition and prevent mental health crisis. MAKING STAFF REFERRALS When in doubt, please consult with a Student Counselor. A student referral can be made by phone at (852) 2358 6696 or online at http://counsel.ust.hk after getting the consensus from the student concerned. You may also accompany your student to visit the Counseling and Wellness Center directly. Our Center is located at Room 5003, Academic Building (via Lift 3). All discussion in counseling sessions will be kept strictly private and confidential under normal circumstances.
