HKUST PG Programs 2025-26 - SHSS

Welcome to the HKUST School of Humanities and Social Science. We are a leader in humanities and social science in Greater China and East Asia. While we are best known for research and postgraduate training on China and comparative research that includes China, we have a growing number of faculty whose research and teaching focuses on other parts of the world. In the humanities, we are best known for philosophy, linguistics, history, literature, and anthropology. In social science, we are known for political science, applied economics, sociology, and psychology. Our colleagues regularly publish their articles in top journals, and their books with top university presses. We are routinely ranked highly by QS, Times Higher Education, and other schemes. Our MPhil and PhD programs are flagship postgraduate programs. Many graduates of our MPhil programs go on to top PhD programs overseas, and some are now tenured or tenure track faculty at such leading institutions as Ohio State, National University of Singapore, Penn, Columbia, and Yale. Others remain at HKUST for the PhD and are now faculty at top universities in Hong Kong, Singapore, mainland China, Taiwan and elsewhere in East Asia. Graduates of our taught postgraduate programs mostly go on to work, but some go on to prestigious research postgraduate programs. We have developed strategic partnerships with North American, European, and Chinese universities, including Shandong University, Shanghai International Studies University, Shantou University, Sichuan University, Sun Yat-sen University, University of Applied Science and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, University of Copenhagen, University of Toronto, Waseda University, Xiamen University and Zhejiang University. These partnerships provide ample opportunities for faculty and student research and collaboration, exchanges, and joint training. These partnerships attest to our standing both as a university of the world and as a world university. Prof. Cameron CAMPBELL Acting Dean of Humanities and Social Science Welcome 2
