UROP Proceeding 2023-24

School of Business and Management Department of Management 188 Judgment and Decision Making in Organizations Supervisor: HAGMANN David / MGMT Student: ZHANG Yuhan / SBM Course: UROP 1000, Summer The study is investigating how people react to different opinions and conflicting views. The experiment involves asking for people's opinions on an issue, randomly assigning them into groups with another participant who holds a different opinion, and allowing them to choose whether to continue the persuading and chatting process. Since Qualtrics may not be perfect for conducting the experiment, this UROP project aims to optimise the experiment using Otree to build the flow. The questionnaire flows have recently been transitioned to Otree, and the initial grouping process has been completed. Role assignment and database importing are still undergoing extensive testing and validation for future implementation. Judgment and Decision Making in Policy Supervisor: HAGMANN David / MGMT Student: KWAN Sum Yuet / ECOF SUNG Wen-chien / GBUS Course: UROP 1100, Fall UROP 1100, Fall Continuing our work during the summer, we conducted a survey examining the relationship between cognitive biases and policy choices. We collected data specifically focused on two climate change policies: carbon tax and geoengineering techniques. Participants were asked to express their level of support for these policies, and we analyzed their responses to identify factors influencing their decision-making processes. The results generally align with our initial hypothesis, but some unexpected deviations have emerged. These discrepancies prompt us to modify the survey further to better understand the underlying reasons for such deviations. The research project aims to provide insights into policy-making and strategies for nudging people towards reducing carbon emissions. The following outlines the process and work conducted during this semester. Judgment and Decision Making in Policy Supervisor: HAGMANN David / MGMT Student: SUNG Wen-chien / GBUS Course: UROP 2100, Spring Continuing our work from last semester, we reviewed the survey examining the relationship between cognitive biases and policy choices. Upon reviewing similar research conducted by other researchers (Cherry et al., 2023, Cherry et al., 2021), we decided to revise the survey from focusing on the people’s choice between carbon tax and geoengineering, into solely on how to drive people’s support for carbon tax. Participants were asked to express their level of support for the carbon tax rebate policy, and we analyzed their responses to identify factors influencing their decision-making processes. The results generally align with our initial hypothesis, but some unexpected deviations have emerged. These discrepancies prompt us to modify the survey further to better understand the underlying reasons for such deviations. The research project aims to provide insights into policy-making and strategies for nudging people towards reducing carbon emissions.
