School of Humanities and Social Science Division of Humanities 192 Division of Humanities Korean War Prisoners Oral History Interview Transcription Supervisor: CHANG David Cheng / HUMA Student: TANG Yidan / GCS-IHSS Course: UROP 1100, Fall UROP 2100, Spring This study is based on an interview with Mr. Hong Guangkui (Kwang Kwei) (洪光煃), an interpreter for the U.S. Army Liaison Group in the China-Burma-India Theater during the Second World War, conducted by Prof. David Cheng Chang. The purpose of this report is to summarise the progress of the interview so far, as well as to provide the reader with a general overview of what is involved in this phase of the research. It consists mainly of Hong’s student experience in universities, including National Southwestern Associated University (西南联大) and National Central university (中央大学), and his working experiences during and after his interpreting work with the U.S. Army Liaison Group. This paper consists of five parts, including the introduction to the project, the required tasks, the preparations, the content compilation and summarization, and the difficulties I encountered together with what I have learned through the project. Korean War Prisoners Oral History Interview Transcription Supervisor: CHANG David Cheng / HUMA Student: WU Yingying / GCS-IHSS Course: UROP 1000, Summer The Battle of Northern Burma and Western Yunnan was a significant conflict during the Chinese SinoJapanese War in World War II. Thousands of translators were mobilized during this war to facilitate seamless communication between the Chinese Nationalist forces and the American forces. In this project, Professor Chang David Cheng has interviewed 6 WWII interpreter, to gather valuable first-hand accounts. I was tasked with transcribing the interviews of one of the translators, Hong Guangkui, from video clips. In this report, I will review my research experience in this oral history transcription project.
