School of Humanities and Social Science Division of Social Science 195 The Development of Information Updating in Working Memory Supervisor: CHENG Chen / SOSC Student: ZHANG Wenyu / QSA Course: UROP 1000, Summer This study explores the use of cognitive offloading in preschool children, focusing on their ability to utilize robotic agents during working memory tasks. We conducted two experiments with 90 children aged 5-6 years to assess their willingness to engage with a stationary versus a movable robot for memory assistance. The study examines whether task difficulty and the sequence of tasks influence children's use of the robot. Results indicate that children demonstrate an awareness of using external agents, with increased engagement observed when the robot's position changes. Our findings may contribute to understanding cognitive development in early childhood and suggest strategies for enhancing educational outcomes through tailored cognitive offloading techniques. Reconstructing Historical Lives from Demographic Data Supervisor: GIETEL-BASTEN Stuart Arthur / SOSC Student: LIN Zhifan / SBM ZHONG Yuqing / BCB-IRE Course: UROP 1000, Summer This research project examines the rates of remarriage across counties in the state of Indiana. The primary goal is to determine the sample size available for further analysis and to investigate the relationship between remarriage rates and overall marriage rates at the county level. Data was collected on the number of remarriages in each Indiana county. This information will be used to calculate the proportion of marriages that are remarriages in each location. The researchers will then analyze how these remarriage rates correlate with the total number of marriages performed in each county. Understanding the patterns of remarriage in Indiana can provide insights into family dynamics, social trends, and the needs of divorced or widowed individuals seeking to remarry. The findings from this initial data collection phase will inform the scope and design of future research on the causes and consequences of remarriage in the state.
