School of Humanities and Social Science Division of Social Science 201 Understanding Experiences in Historical Environments Supervisor: TAM Kim-Pong / SOSC Student: CHAU Ka Ching / GCS-IHSS Course: UROP 1000, Summer Historical places can be tourist landmarks, museums, or historical buildings. Recognizing the historical significance of a place is essential and influences psychological processes. These processes include the awareness of a site in a historical context and further produce emotions and behaviours (Ries, & Schwan, 2023; Burkitt, 2021). Understanding how people think and feel when they interact with historical environments not only helps with heritage preservation and education but also contributes to the study of environmental and social psychology. Despite this, there is a lack of comprehensive studies examining the emotional and behavioural responses of individual visitors at historical sites. Previous research has focused on the negative emotions experienced at dark heritage sites, which are often linked to themes of death and suffering (Bull, & De Angeli, 2021; Nasar, & Bokharaei, 2017). One study has proposed a framework suggesting that physical, cognitive, and affective engagement are interrelated dimensions that shape historical experiences through the analysis of psychological responses (Zachrich et al., 2020). Consequently, there is a need to explore the psychological effects that the historical aspects of locations can evoke at a more comprehensive level. This paper, therefore, aims to examine the emotional and behavioural changes individuals experience following their visits to historical sites. Understanding Experiences in Historical Environments Supervisor: TAM Kim-Pong / SOSC Student: MA Qiyao / GCS-IHSS Course: UROP 1100, Fall UROP 2100, Spring In the project of Understanding Experiences in Historical Environment, this research put stress on the impact of museum shop on the visitor’s experience. After reviewing previous literature, it is found that as one of the most common types of heritage, museum has a significant role in the preservation of artefacts and the dissemination of knowledge about heritage. Many scholars have discussed the influencing factors of the popularity of museum shops, the role of museum shops and so on, while the visitor's experience has been neglected to a certain extent. Therefore, this study hopes to focus on visitors' feelings and analyze the role of museum shops from visitors' perspectives.
