However, the existing approach often relies on a narrow, quantitative-focused methodology, which may limit the incorporation of a wider range of ESG factors and their potential impact on company valuation. This research project aims to complement the current ESG assessment framework with a more comprehensive methodology that analyzes the ESG risks and opportunities of each company based on its ESG reporting. The goal is to understand how a company's specific ESG initiatives can affect its valuation in the financial market. This initial phase focuses on large data collection, which will be further analyzed and interpreted using AI/ML techniques. Green Finance and Sustainable Investments Supervisor: ZHOU Zoey Yiyuan / ENVR Student: YI Shangyu / EVMT Course: UROP 1100, Fall UROP 2100, Spring This research project examines Chinese companies' environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance and green innovation within the manufacturing sector, set against China's commitment to carbon neutrality by 2060. Using the LSEG ESG Scoring Framework, the study looks at the ESG scores of 1,270 Chinese companies and finds that most of them are in the second quartile, which means they are doing okay and aren't too secretive. Comparative analysis with Asian and European companies exposes a gap, suggesting Chinese firms lag in ESG metrics. The study underscores the necessity for Chinese companies to enhance ESG practices for global competitiveness and highlights the role of green innovation in driving sustainability. Future work will explore cross-border solutions for sustainable development within the global financing and investing market.
