The Power of Diversity

Beauty in diversity HKUST is known for its education and research in science, technology and business management. These areas of knowledge are just one side of the story – art and culture are also emerging ski l l sets among our students. Witness four alumni ar tists showcasing their abilities in this very special exhibition that shows the power of passion, following your dreams, and being the best you can be. Together We Empower – these four artists show that the collective is more important than the individual, and the sum is greater than its parts.

Jeanie worked in the banking industry for a couple of years after earning a business degree from HKUST. Her childhood dream of becoming an artist went unrealized until she decided to become a full-time painter in 2009 after taking a short painting course. Since the creation of her signature character “Oowa” alongside the publication of her first picture book “A Time for the Heart” in 2010, Jeanie’s talents have been further showcased in her publications and solo exhibitions. She also collaborated with well-known brands on several creative initiatives. After participating in an international art exhibition in Hong Kong in 2015, she held her first European solo exhibition in Italy in 2016. Today, Jeanie still paints with gratitude for the opportunity to witness and experience the growth of life again as a mother, which has allowed her to paint with a new perspective. Flow of Life Many artists shy away from intimate depictions of family life, but Jeanie embraces them with verve, style and passion. She employs a wide range of colors, walking down the path of simple expression, which connects the audience in a meaningful and deep way. Jeanie’s whimsical paintings, evocative of Marc Chagall, are accompanied by similarly fascinating depictions created by Sonia, Jeanie’s 7-year-old daughter. Together these artworks present how the mother and daughter shape each other and the joy of childhood, both from the child’s perspective and also from the mother, who learns more about the meaning of parenthood. This exhibition serves as a special conversation between the two in the form of art.

Drawing and flying were both Claudia’s childhood dreams. She mapped out her career path when she was 15 years old, inspired by a newspaper article about a female pilot. She chose civil engineering as her major at HKUST, which included fluid mechanics, a discipline related to aviation. In her second year of university, Claudia joined the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps and received a scholarship from the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators to achieve her Private Pilot License in Australia. Upon graduation, Claudia was accepted to the Dragonair Cadet Pilot Program (later known as Cathay Dragon), becoming a cadet in 2008 and then pilot in 2010. With the closure of Cathay Dragon, Claudia, who had become a mother of two, was able to take a break after her 13-year career as a pilot and resume her childhood dream of being an artist. Focusing on drawing pets and animals, Claudia learnt about pastel drawing and oil painting by watching YouTube artist channels. She resumed flying recently but still hopes to continue her art career. The human and animal bond Pilot Claudia’s love of animals translates into a photo realist style, with harmony in composition and color, and vivid l ivel iness that recal l the Impressionist stylings of Pierre-Auguste Renoir or Paul Gaughan. Claudia has been interested in animals for a very long time, having owned pets, and had completed pet portraits before. Her current focus on pets came after she made a pet portrait of her friends’ dog, which was quickly shared across social media, garnering lots of attention. Looking at Claudia’s artwork, one is inspired by her life-like depictions that create a sense of beauty and intimacy. Yet one of the limitations of Claudia’s work is the time it takes to complete one portrait, taking anywhere from one to two weeks, meaning she can only draw a handful a month. We hope that she can continue to fly and paint at the same time!

A keen photographer starting from his teenage years, Terence threw caution to the wind and became a professional photographer, after working in IT for more than a decade. Terence has developed his own style of visual design and branched out to work on commercials, corporate events and music videos, all while pursuing his passion for photography. In December 2017 and November 2018, Terence staged his exhibition "Girl. Improvise", a recollection of his 10year journey in photography, at Jao Tsung-I Academy and HKUST respectively. "Every photo is a story as well as a starting point for understanding. The photo is a by-product to jot a note during my journey of creativity", says Terence. He adds: "pursue excellence, and success will follow". He is a disciple of the famous photographer Mr Alain Yip, also known as the Venerable Chang Lin after being a monk. I shoot, therefore I am A 14-year veteran of the image industry, Terence believes that capturing the moment is like taking a breath - it is essential to life. In "I shoot, therefore I am", Terence embraces the rare opportunity to stage a retrospective of the images he has shot, bringing back treasured recollections in a vivid manner. For Terence, photography is like a key to open the door to those particular moments, just like a time machine. Famous cinematographer Mark Lee PingBing said that capturing images of fered new hope, as people came and went time after time under the unchanged scenery. The presentation of this exhibition is in "Instagram" format, intended to bring all the moments and experiences to life.
