How Counseling has helped me : Self-discovery
Every since I was young, I have been taught that being strong is the most
important thing to live our life. So, every time I encountered difficulty, I
would tell myself, “stay strong.” I prided myself for being independent and
not requiring aid from anyone around me. Somehow I supposed that if any
difficulties were to arise, I would be able to handle it. The way I handled it
was to internally examine my faults and traits. Then, try my own way to
work out the problems. If I felt the problems were unable to be solved by
simple thinking process, I would choose to put it aside and ignore it, be-
lieving that if I can’t help myself, no one can.
It turned out that I was wrong. In December 2007, I was really depressed
but refused to speak to anyone about it. I chose to hide my feelings and
emotions, thinking that, “time will heal all” or “one just can’t expect to
build bridges overnight.” I thought my problems would disappear over
time and one day I would wake up and see that attended participated in a
counseling session.
Now, I am extremely thankful for what I did. In the very beginning I asked
myself, “why do I need to go to counseling? I am okay, no one can help
me.” Yet, I entered the counseling room with an open mind, being pre-
pared to listen to what my counselor said and advised me. After a while, I
realized what the real purpose of counseling was. In fact, my counselor
didn’t give me any particular advices. In most sessions, she did little or did
not talk much but she was very attentive to my sharing.
