School of Engineering Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 162 Exploring the Aero-Science behind Flyingsuits Design Supervisor: REDONNET Stephane / MAE Student: SACHDEVA Nidhish / SENG Course: UROP1000, Summer This UROP 1000 project constituted a first step towards the computational exploration of the design of wingsuits (also called flying-suits). To this end, the computational strategy was first established, being then validated through a popular benchmark case. This consisted in performing various steady aerodynamic simulations involving a NACA0012 airfoil, which was achieved by solving the steady RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations along with a SST k-ω turbulence model using a structured mesh. The lift and drag polars obtained compared favourably with results coming from the literature. Upon its validation, the computational methodology was then applied to the case of a 3D wingsuit model, delivering early insights about the complex aerodynamic flow features it entails. A follow-up UROP project is on its way. Digitalization of Wet Lab Project Supervisor: YANG Jinglei / MAE Student: LAU Yuen Hei / MAE Course: UROP1100, Fall During this semester, I worked on a UROP project supervised by Prof Jinglei Yang in the MAE department. The goal of this project is to digitalize chemical storage inside wet labs with an in-house innovated X-Tray system that detects and measures the weight of chemicals with time stamp and user ID. The information will then be stored in a database to track the chemical usage in the lab. The tray could also warn users when dangerous chemicals were put together to minimize chemical accidents. In this project, I improved the design of X-Tray in both mechanical and software aspects. For mechanical design, I optimized the accuracy of weight sensing & reading and rigidity of the system by changing the design and configuration of weight sensors. For software, I designed a more user-friendly GUI which can visualize the data obtained from the system with the help of another research assistant. This report will be focusing on the design of the hardware and analysis of the improvements. Through this UROP project, I have gained a lot of experiences to solve practical problems via learning-by-doing engineering mindset and our “Can Do” spirit. I do appreciate very much this opportunity provided by HKUST and Prof Yang.
