School of Business and Management Department of Economics 177 The Local Impacts of BRI Projects Supervisor: LIN Yatang / ECON Student: JIANG Yuxuan / SSCI Course: UROP1100, Summer BRI (The Belt and Road Initiative) is a granted global infrastructure plan initiated by the Chinese government in 2013. Chinese Prime Minister Xi Jinping issued it as a “Major Country Diplomacy” strategy. Up to August 2022, 149 countries have joined BRI. Our team is working on The Local Impacts of BRI Projects from different perspectives (e.g., trade, industrial activities, firms’ activities) and finding out both the intended and unintended consequences. In this summer (6th July–31st August) UROP project, we focused on matching the geo location manually and used R code to scrape the geocode to make an intuitive map. Professor Yatang Lin and Jin Wang supervise our team. And Ph.D. candidates Pak Hung Lam, Fangyuan Peng, and M.Phil. student Mingjie (Abel) Xu co-supervise our project. Also, the report will illustrate each step’s coding and respective reasons for it. The project is about collecting information related to the projects in Bridge and Road Initiative (BRI) and using Python to do geo-coding to analyze the local impact of them. Each student is assigned to several countries’ BRI projects and through searching, scrapping and organizing data, they can manage to do final matching task by using the aid-data to find out the matching results. After that, it will illustrate the manual geolocation search of some unmatched results. Then, R are applied for the mapping for these projects to see the location and frequency of my assigned data. Finally, the report will briefly explain some significant projects for each countries. The study will also explore the incentives for Chinese governments and firms to participate in overseas projects. We assume Chinese companies, especially manufacture factories, are connected under the BRI projects via bid invitation and bidding. We will compile a geocoded firm-level project bidding dataset to examine and find out more information. This research is still in progress, the task of this semester is to clean the bidding data of corresponding BRI countries.
