School of Business and Management Department of Economics 179 Kin "Taxes"? How Filipina Domestic Workers in Hong Kong Manage Family Expectations Supervisor: VISARIA Sujata / ECON Student: TANG Tsz Yeung Alvis / ECOF Course: UROP2100, Fall UROP3100, Spring Filipina domestic workers in Hong Kong earn higher incomes than in the Philippines but most report no improvement in their living standards. Continuing on previous fieldwork, the research team conducted a mixed-methods study with 25 participants this past semester. In this report, I highlight three emergent themes from my reading of 5 qualitative in-depth interviews. Firstly, it is common for domestic workers to view migration as an intra-household venture. Secondly, some domestic workers avoid loans. Last but not least, the Christian faith has had a rather large influence on some participant's financial life and beyond. I also discuss potential future directions and interventions. Exploratory Research to Inform a Financial Planning Tool for Migrant Domestic Workers in Hong Kong Supervisor: VISARIA Sujata / ECON Student: NAM Yebin / ECON PURI Sneha / ECON SONG Xiaolong / ECOF Course: UROP1100, Spring UROP2100, Fall UROP3100, Spring UROP1100, Spring The project, “Exploratory Research to Inform a Financial Planning Tool for Migrant Domestic Workers in Hong Kong'', aims to conduct exploratory study on the financial wellbeing of Filipna domestic workers in Hong Kong (commonly referred to as OFWs) and feed into the design of a new financial planning tool to improve their migration outcomes. While this Undergraduate Research Opportunities Project (UROP) is a continuation of the studies done in previous semesters, this particular semester we conducted interviews of 25 Filipina domestic workers (OFWs) in Hong Kong and are at the stage of quality control and data cleaning. Exploratory Research to Inform a Financial Planning Tool for Migrant Domestic Workers in Hong Kong Supervisor: VISARIA Sujata / ECON Student: ONGRATANAPHOL Ramon / MAEC Course: UROP2100, Fall Filipina domestic workers (commonly referred to as OFWs) make up an integral part of Hong Kong’s care economy. There are around 170,000 OFWs in Hong Kong. We conducted quantitative surveys with 57 OFWs in July and August 2021. The first stage of this process was to post an advertisement on the Facebook page of a Filipino newspaper that is popular amongst OFWs, The Sun. To express their interest and willingness to be interviewed, we asked them to complete a 5-minute-long survey about their life (such as marital status, number of kids, age, etc), based on which we could divide them in Focus Groups, and contact information. After they were divided into appropriate groups, we contacted them on a first-come-first basis.
