Weather Warnings in Hong Kong Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) is the alerting authority in Hong Kong to issue the following weather warnings: Typhoon or Rainstorm Preparedness • When there is a typhoon or rainstorm signal, take necessary precautions and make sure all loose items are properly fastened and ALL WINDOWS ARE CLOSED. • When typhoon signal No. 8 or above is hoisted, stay INDOORS. All normal activities on campus will stop. Pay particular attention to the provision of catering service on campus as the services may not be available. Do stock up on food and essentials before the signal is hoisted. • Visitor registration will be suspended once the Hong Kong Observatory announces that Typhoon Signal No. 8 or a higher signal WILL be hoisted. Registered visitors will be asked to leave the hall and return to their place of residence for safety. Uncooperative visitors, along with their hosts, may face penalties. • When a black rainstorm signal is hoisted, stay INDOORS wherever you are and do not leave the building until the signal is lowered, and you find the condition is SAFE to do so. • For catering outlets arrangements during adverse weather conditions, please visit the webpage of Campus Services Office (CSO) at https://cso.ust.hk/cat/bad_wea. Smart Food Waste Recycling As Hong Kong’s first academic institution to launch a self-financed smart food waste recycling bin program, we are proud to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to sustainability. We highly encourage residents to download the GREEN$ mobile app to start earning points for recycling food waste. This is the exact same rewards system used for the Smart Recycling Bins located outside the LG1 Canteen and Staff Quarters Tower 12. Accumulated points can easily be redeemed for everyday household essentials or supermarket e-vouchers! • Switch off light, air conditioner and other electronic appliances when they are not in use. • Reduce water wastage by turning off dripping taps. • Reduce water consumption by spending less time in the shower. • Recycling paper, clothes and other resources whenever possible. • Support the environmentally friendly programs and activities organized by SHRLO and the Hall Office. • Get loaded when doing laundry, it takes less energy to do one big load than two smaller ones. • Reduce the need for ironing by taking clothes out of the dryer slightly damp and hanging them up. • Clothing recycling boxes are available outside SKCC (next to express lifts) for easy drop-off. • Stay updated on residence hall announcements about check-out recycling initiatives and the HKUST Garage Sale. • Make effective use of any used item(s) and donate item(s) to people in need via charitable organization such as: The Salvation Army Recycling Programme: https://recycling.salvationarmy.org.hk/ Po Leung Kuk In-kind Donation: https://www.poleungkuk.org.hk/en/page/detail/17356/ How to Live a Green Hall Life?
