[5], or overexpress the urease gene (enhance the transcription and translation of the gene) to increase the concentration of the biocatalyst [9]. Potential Uses of Biocement The self-healing properties of biocement make it a perfect material for future infrastructure construction. By incorporating bacteria into bridges and urban structures, we can harness them to actively seal the gaps, preventing moisture from reaching and corroding internal steel structures [9]. Therefore, biocement also acts as a powerful tool for structural rehabilitation. Large-scale underwater engineering marvels, such as old dams and tunnels, often suffer from high hydromechanical stress from the surrounding water [4]. Biocement can be injected into existing fissures to fortify these structures. The impermeability of the calcium carbonate formed can effectively reduce, or stop water flow across the structure, preventing catastrophic failures [4, 11]. Soil stabilization is another possible use. Loose terrain is vulnerable to erosion and landslides. MICP has demonstrated its potential to prevent erosion and landslides by holding loose sand particles together, although the efficacy is also subject to soil type and slope geometry [4, 7, 12]. Conclusion After all, nature has spent millions of years perfecting its own kind of engineering. By letting bacteria do the work, we have the potential to build smarter cities that can “fix” themselves while using fewer scarce resources. This gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "concrete jungle."
