NOTABLE ALUMNI Aaron CHOW BSc in Mathematics (International Research Enrichment Track), Class of 2018 PhD in Mathematics, Columbia University Assistant Professor of Mathematics, HKUST My years at HKUST played a formative role in shaping me both academically and personally. As an undergraduate, I was given the freedom and opportunities to explore mathematics beyond the classroom, interact closely with faculty, and discover what doing research really means. These experiences gave me the preparation to pursue a PhD at Columbia University and later conduct postdoctoral research at MIT. What I value most about HKUST is an environment that encourages students to aim high while giving them the support and freedom to explore their own paths. Returning to HKUST as a faculty member has made that journey especially meaningful. Louis TSE BSc in Physics, Class of 2016 Scientific Officer, Hong Kong Observatory, HKSAR Government To me, studying physics at HKUST involves far more than manipulating equations, exploring abstract theories, or working in the laboratory. The rigorous curriculum, hands-on experiments, and research opportunities have not only provided me with a solid foundation in the professional scientific knowledge, but have also helped me develop keen observational skills and scientific skepticism. These training enables me to interpret real-world data and diagnostic charts when analyzing complex physical systems during daily weather forecasting and climate analysis. Outside the classroom, HKUST has offered numerous internship opportunities that have allowed me to translate scientific knowledge into practical applications, providing valuable support for my career in atmospheric science. 35
