My experience at HKUST and in the Mathematics and Economics (MAEC) program played a pivotal role in shaping both my personal and professional journey. MAEC equipped me with strong quantitative, statistical and econometric skills, while teaching me to apply economic reasoning to real-world business and financial challenges. The program fostered critical thinking and a data-driven approach to decision-making that continue to underpin my work in equity research today. Beyond the classroom, HKUST's international environment and overseas exchange opportunities broadened my global perspective and strengthened my adaptability. Together, these experiences helped me develop the analytical rigor, intellectual curiosity and resilience needed to navigate the fast-evolving financial industry. Alison HOR BSc in Mathematics and Economics, Class of 2016 Senior Equity Research Associate & Team Leader, Bloomberg Intelligence Victor TSANG BSc in Chemistry, Class of 2019 MPhil in Bioengineering, HKUST, Class of 2021 PhD in Bioengineering, HKUST, Class of 2025 Product Manager & Co-founder, PhoMedics Limited I am deeply grateful to HKUST for its rigorous academic atmosphere that first ignited my passion for research, and for the international opportunities that broadened my outlook. My exchange study in Sweden particularly sparked my interest in global outreach. Participating in the Million Dollar Competition was instrumental in refining our research ideas for translation into a startup and provided crucial early support on our entrepreneurial journey. These experiences inspired me to take promising research beyond the lab and bring it to the world to create real impact. I encourage current students to step outside their comfort zones — that is where the most meaningful growth happens. 36
