Professor Yigong Shi is President of Westlake University, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a Foreign Associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Professor Shi is a structural biologist whose research has provided mechanistic insights into programmed cell death, regulated intramembrane proteolysis, and RNA splicing. He determined the first atomic structure of an intact spliceosome in 2015, the first atomic structure of the human spliceosome in 2017, and the first structure of a minor spliceosome in 2020. His research has strongly influenced the development of biopharmaceuticals. Professor Shi joined Princeton University as an Assistant Professor in 1998 and was promoted to Full Professor in 2003. In 2007, he was named the Warner-Lambert/Parke-Davis Professor of Molecular Biology. He returned to Tsinghua University in 2008, where he led reforms that transformed the university’s life sciences community. He served as Dean of Life Sciences and Vice President of Tsinghua University. In April 2018, he became the Founding President of Westlake University, China’s first new-type research university. Professor Shi received his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University in 1989 and his Ph.D. in Biophysics from Johns Hopkins University in 1995. He completed his postdoctoral training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
