Welcome Message On behalf of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, it is my great honour to welcome you to the 2026 World Class University Presidents Forum (WCUPF), held under the theme Higher Education Reimagined: Innovating for the Future. In this period of extraordinary change—driven by artificial intelligence, shifting geopolitics, new economic demands, and renewed questions about the value and purpose of universities—the Forum asks not only how universities can adapt, but how they can lead. Our opening panel, The University and the Century Ahead, will set the stage by exploring what universities must preserve and what they must reinvent to remain a force for knowledge, wisdom, and the betterment of society. Through the keynote address, panel dialogues, and roundtable discussions, the program will examine the university through three interconnected lenses: the University in the AI Era, the University and Society, and the University and Civilization. Together, we will explore how universities can educate and empower the next generation, translate ideas into innovation, advance global health and open science, and tackle pressing planetary challenges—all while deepening our local roots and expanding our global impact. To ensure our dialogue translates into meaningful action, we will conclude the Forum by charting a roadmap for universities to navigate the future. Beyond the formal sessions, we hope you will take full advantage of the opportunities to forge new connections, exchange profound insights, and experience the vibrant, innovative spirit of Hong Kong and the region. About The 2026 World Class University Presidents Forum Higher Education Reimagined: Innovating for the Future The 2026 World Class University Presidents Forum (WCUPF) convenes leaders of the world’s foremost universities for a candid conversation about the future of higher education. During this period of extraordinary change—driven by artificial intelligence (AI), shifting geopolitics, new economic demands, and rising questions about the value and purpose of universities themselves— the Forum seeks to explore not how universities can adapt, but how they can lead. Universities are among the most enduring institutions humanity has built, predating most nations and every modern technology. Yet endurance is not immortality. Within a single generation, machines will teach and research alongside us. The meaning of a degree will be tested as never before, and the social compact that sustains the research university will be reshaped. The choices made by today’s leaders will determine whether the university of 2050 still stands at the center of human knowledge—and in what form. Under the theme Higher Education Reimagined: Innovating for the Future, this inaugural Forum brings together presidents, rectors, and vice-chancellors across borders and disciplines to confront the defining challenges of our time: governing the age of AI, advancing global health and open science, meeting the world’s grand challenges, powering the future economy, and deepening the university’s bond with the communities it serves. Through the keynote addresses and intimate roundtable dialogues, participants will engage in candid discussions — the kind that can only be undertaken by peers who carry the same responsibilities. This event is more than a conference. It is a shared act of imagination: an effort to picture the university of 2050 and to begin building it today. The universities of the future may look very different from those of today — learning unbound from the lecture hall, discovery accelerated by intelligent machines, campuses woven into the life of their cities, and knowledge flowing freely across a changing world. What will not change is the university’s deepest purpose: to seek truth, to nurture the whole person, and to serve humanity. The Forum is dedicated to preserving this purpose, even as the world continues to change and evolve. 4

Organizer | 主辦機構 The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology 香港科技大學 Founded in 1991, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a world-class university renowned for its excellence in innovative education, research, and impactful knowledge transfer. Adopting a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to education, HKUST was ranked 33rd globally and 6th in Asia in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and QS Asia University Rankings 2026, respectively. It was also ranked 20th worldwide in the Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, placing first among universities in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland for the third consecutive year. Eleven HKUST subjects were ranked among the world’s top 50 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. In addition, HKUST’s Computer Science discipline, which encompasses areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, was ranked No. 1 in Hong Kong for the tenth consecutive year in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026. Its graduates are highly competitive, consistently ranking among the world’s top 30 most sought-after employees. In research and entrepreneurship, more than 80% of HKUST’s research was rated “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” in the University Grants Committee’s Research Assessment Exercise 2020. As machines take on work once thought to require human judgment, the task before university leaders grows larger than any technology: to define what a graduate must be able to do that no machine can, and to turn intelligence into invention that serves people. This theme holds those two commitments together—the formation of human beings, and the innovation that formation makes possible. 人工智能正在重塑大學的教學、知識探索與價值創造的方式，其步伐之迅速，非多數院校的既有 體制所能應對。當昔日有賴人類判斷的工作逐漸由機器代勞，大學領導面臨的課題已不只關乎 技術，既要重新界定畢業生應具備哪些機器無法取代的能力，也要將智能轉化為創新發明，以造福 人類。本主題探討大學如何兼顧此雙重使命：作育人才，並以人才引領創新。 The modern university is no longer a place apart, but a partner in the health and survival of the communities it serves—and, increasingly, of the planet itself. Pandemics, aging populations, a warming climate: no government, company, or country solves these alone, and universities hold much of the knowledge and convening power the work requires. Throughout history, universities have been among the most enduring engines of human civilization, passing the flame of knowledge across generations and across borders. In an ever more closely connected world, their role as bridges between peoples and cultures has never mattered more. Susanne AALTO Deputy President and Deputy CEO Chalmers University of Technology 查爾姆斯理工大學副校長兼副首席執行長 Susanne Aalto is Deputy President and Deputy CEO of Chalmers University of Technology, with responsibility for the academic environment and academic excellence. She has held this position since January 2024. In her role as Deputy President, she works with the strategic development of Chalmers’ academic environment, research excellence and faculty recruitment, including initiatives to attract and develop leading researchers and strengthen internationally competitive research environments. She has held several academic leadership positions at Chalmers, including Chair of the Faculty Senate and Head of the Division of Astronomy and Plasma Physics. Aalto is also Professor of Radio Astronomy and an internationally recognised researcher in extragalactic astronomy. Her research focuses on galaxy evolution and the interplay between star formation, supermassive black holes, molecular gas, inflows and galactic outflows. Her work uses major international research infrastructures including ALMA and the James Webb Space Telescope. She is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA) and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA). Ibrahim Abubakar is Vice Provost (Health) and Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at UCL. Prior to his current role, he held multiple leadership positions at UCL including Pro-Provost (Health), Dean of the Faculty of Population Health Sciences, and Director of the Institute for Global Health. He led the UCL Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology, UCL-TB and was a senior investigator at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit. He was head of TB at Public Health England and was a Professor in Health Protection at the Norwich Medical School. He is a member of the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, University College Hospitals NHS Trust Board, UCL Partners Board and the Board of Resolve to Save Lives. He is the chair of Lancet Migration: global collaboration to advance migration health. He was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2020, member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2024 and member of the US National Academy of Medicine in 2025. He was appointed NIHR Senior Investigator Emeritus in 2025. Previous roles include chairing the WHO Clinical Trials Forum, the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Tuberculosis until 2019, Wellcome Trust Expert Review Group on Population Health until 2022 and the NIHR Global Health Professorship Committee until 2025. Prof. Chang Jin is currently the President of the University of Science and Technology of China and an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was previously the Director of the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Director of the National Astronomical Observatories, and the Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has long been engaging in the detections and researches of gamma ray emission and high energy charged particles that come from outer space. He created and developed a new technique of detecting high energy cosmic ray electrons and led the DAMPE (also called “WuKong”) project as the chair scientist based on the technique, achieving a breakthrough in China’s astronomical satellite. He was a Research Fellow (2018-2019) in the Special Program for Urban and Regional Studies (SPURS), with a focus on International Development, at the Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is Professor of Higher Education Internationalization at UBA and Adjoint Professor in the Department of Economics at the School of Economic Sciences (UBA). Currently, he serves as Vice-President of International Affairs at UBA, Director of the UBA Latin America-China Observatory, and Director of the Confucius Institute in Buenos Aires.
