Sir Jim McDonald KT GBE led the University of Strathclyde as Principal and Vice-Chancellor from 2009-2025, guiding its strategy, research and innovation, and international partnerships; he is now its Emeritus Principal. He holds the Rolls Royce Chair in Electrical Systems and worked in the Electric Utility Industry before joining Strathclyde. He was President of CESAER from 2017-19, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering from 2019-24, and currently Chairs Scottish Enterprise, co-Chairs the Scottish Energy Advisory Board with Scotland’s First Minister and holds several non-executive roles in engineering companies. Sir Jim was knighted in 2012, appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire in 2024 and in July 2026 he was installed by His Majesty King Charles III as a Knight of the Order of the Thistle. He serves as the founding UK Chair of the UK–China Joint Steering Committee on Engineering & Technology Cooperation. He is an International Member of both the US National Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Science and an Honorary Professor at Peking and Tsinghua universities, he holds an honorary doctorate from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and received the 2025 Chinese Government Friendship Award.
