Professor Mosa Moshabela assumed office as Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Cape Town (UCT) on 1 August 2024. Following his appointment, he also took up the position of Chairperson of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU). Prof. Moshabela is the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Chairperson of the Board at the National Research Foundation of South Africa, Board member of the South African Medical Research Council and Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Health of the Academy of Science of South Africa. Trained as a medical doctor, Prof. Moshabela became a clinician scientist and focused on health systems and implementation science for infectious diseases, and more recently, advancing innovation by building regional ecosystems and value chains in Africa. His leadership focuses on teaching, research, transformation and positioning UCT as a catalyst for innovation in Africa, guided by ubuntu. Internationally, he contributed to several high level bodies, including the international advisory board for The Lancet Healthy Longevity, the Lancet Commission on synergies between Health Promotion, Universal Healthcare Access and Global Health Security, and the Commission of the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine on the Global Roadmap to Healthy Longevity.
