Foreword
Professor Tony F Chan
President
Dear Alumni,
I was thrilled to welcome our Class of 1995
and their families on campus to celebrate
their 20th graduation anniversary recently.
Alumni were particularly delighted to meet
some of the professors who taught them all
those years ago. I always enjoy chatting with
our alumni on these occasions and nding
out about their latest happenings.
As our alumni network expands, your
footprints can be traced to almost every
corner of the world. Vice-President for
Institutional Advancement Dr Eden Woon
and I were pleased to meet up with alumni
and former exchange-in students in Warsaw
and Prague during our recent University trip
to Central Europe; we enjoyed these warm
and joyful gatherings very much. We also
visited universities to explore academic and
research collaborations.
My congratulations go to Alvin Lam, who
was elected as Convocation Chairman in
April. He is the rst alumnus to head both
HKUST Convocation and HKUST Alumni
Association concurrently. I am sure both
organizations will thrive under his leadership
amid the tightening of bonds among alumni
and between alumni and the University.
May I extend my gratitude to Founding
Convocation Chairman Sean Lin and his
teams for their hard work over the past
few years.
Our feature story this issue concerns
a very enterprising and hard-working
young woman – Samantha Kong. She
has self-published a book aimed at
inspiring secondary school students to
study and follow a career in engineering.
An environmental engineer herself, who
graduated from HKUST with a BEng, she has
persuaded other engineers of all types, all of
whom are either our alumni or engineering
students, to tell their own stories about their
lives as engineers or their school lives. I was
honored to be asked to write one of the
forewords to the book. Actually, I can think of
very few people more inspirational to aspiring
engineers than Samantha – her resume is
very impressive and includes an internship
with the United Nations in New York!
Finally, I cannot let this message end
without referring to our plans for the 25th
anniversary of HKUST, and how the Alumni
Endowment Fund (AEF) is to be a part of the
celebrations.
I am pleased to let you know that the
Fund has reached a high of HK$18 million,
and we now have over 1,800 alumni donors.
But even more valuable is that we have over
HK$600,000 in interest to be allocated to
students for 2014/2015. Among the latest
donations is HK$1 million from alumna
Jiang Wenyan, to establish the YUNEEC
Outstanding Engineering Student Award.
Of course, not everyone is able to make
contributions of this size – and we welcome
donations large and small. To mark the
milestone of HKUST, I wish to encourage
alumni to join hands and make a birthday gift
to our alma mater. We have the ambitious
target of HK$25 million – so show you
believe in HKUST and donate today!
Preparations for celebrations are well
under way and details will be revealed soon.
I look forward to the participation of our
alumni, all of whom have helped to shape
and make HKUST what it is today.
Best wishes,
It was my delight to compete with our alumni and staff at the annual Alumni Endowment Fund Cup Golf Tournament recently.
It’s good to see the close bonds that are being forged among alumni through the great game of golf!
