Over the last few years HKUST has also bred a number of young entrepreneurs. Leo Wong (BBA
2014) and his team began pursuing their entrepreneurial aspiration long before their graduation.
They are so committed to developing their original product that they turned down attractive job
offers from large corporations. The results are encouraging: not only has the team won the Hong
Kong Young Entrepreneur Challenge, they have also secured US$1 million seed funds from
investors. Their journey of entrepreneurship starts right from HKUST.
Inspired by a moment, with a song
The idea came to Leo during the semester he spent as an exchange student in Europe. Soaked
in the breathtaking views of Switzerland while Air Supply’s “Goodbye” was playing in his ears,
he felt a strong urge to share that exact moment with his friends – both the mood and the tune.
That was when the idea of his startup took shape. While there are only text-centric platforms like
Twitter, and photo sharing media like Instagram, a social platform that allows people to share
feelings and music, like Sensbeat, would be unique in the market. When he returned to HKUST,
Leo decided to make his idea a reality.
What do Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg have
in common? The obvious answer is that all of them founded,
and went on to lead, immensely successful tech enterprises.
But there’s something more – they all launched their startups
before they graduated from universities.
Launch a business before graduation?
Why not
